Smarter Bus Charging: Future-Proofing Fleet Electrification

Kwetta, in partnership with Ritchies Transport and EVisi Group, and with support from EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority), has delivered a next-generation electrification project at Ritchies’ Birkenhead Depot. Using Kwetta’s Prime Grid Gateway, the site is now equipped for scalable, intelligent EV bus charging—future-proofing operations for decades to come.

The Challenge: Scaling Fleet Electrification

Electrifying large bus depots presents significant infrastructure hurdles. Traditional approaches often require new feeders or costly grid upgrades, creating delays and inflating project budgets. For operators planning long-term growth, these constraints risk limiting the scale and speed of transition.

The Solution: Kwetta Prime Grid Gateway + EVisi Integration

Kwetta’s Prime Grid Gateway unlocks medium-voltage grid capacity, enabling charging for more than 120 buses without new feeders or grid upgrades. Combined with EVisi’s fleet scheduling and energy management platform, the system reduces operational costs while ensuring charging aligns with depot workflows and grid availability.

Outcomes Delivered

  • Future-Proof Capacity: Infrastructure in place to support charging for over 120 buses.

  • Operational Efficiency: Energy management and scheduling reduce opex costs for both power and fleet operations.

  • Industry Leadership: EECA-backed project demonstrates how smart technology accelerates low-emission transport at scale.

Leadership in Action

“Future-proofing our operations with Kwetta means ensuring we have the right technology in place to scale for long-term operations,” says Pete Algie, Decarbonisation Lead at Ritchies.

A Model for the Future

The Birkenhead Depot project sets a benchmark for large-scale fleet electrification in Australasia. With the right technology and industry collaboration, operators can avoid expensive infrastructure upgrades while deploying scalable, sustainable transport solutions.

Kwetta’s Prime Grid Gateway is designed to grow with fleets—from a single heavy vehicle to more than 100—enabling operators to electrify confidently, at lower cost and with fewer delays.
